Phil Dirt – Premium Roots-First Potting Blend
Phil Dirt is a soil-less potting blend I developed for my own collection after years of experimenting with what actually works across a wide range of houseplants. It’s built around one core principle: strong roots need consistent moisture, oxygen, and stability — without constant adjustment.
The foundation of this mix is finely processed tree fern fiber, chosen for its ability to hold moisture and humidity without becoming waterlogged. By grinding it down to remove long strands and clumps, the result is a more uniform, root-friendly substrate that stays balanced instead of compacting.
To support natural aeration and long-term structure, Phil Dirt is blended with orchid bark, pumice, perlite, biochar, and a small amount of volcanic material. These components work together to create a mix that breathes on its own, without the need for excessive add-ins or constant tweaking.
While I originally developed Phil Dirt with aroids in mind, I’ve found it performs exceptionally well across most houseplants. It retains moisture without staying wet, drains efficiently, and provides a stable environment that encourages healthy root development over time.
Tree fern fiber is also naturally sourced, sustainably harvested, and slow to break down, meaning plants can often stay in this mix longer before needing to be repotted.
This is the mix I use every day in my own grow space. I’m proud to share it, and I hope it supports your plants as well as it has supported mine.
Roots first. Always.
